Eloise Kramer triumphed in the historic Olney Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday 21 February 2023, completing the 415-yard course in a time of just 65 seconds. She was a first-time entrant to the race and took the lead from the start in a field of 20 runners. Eloise said “It was really good fun. I got roped into it and I’m glad I did. Such brilliant community and such a great event”.
Eloise also won the International Race against the town of Liberal, Kansas – their winner, Isabelle Sullenger, completed the race in a time of 73 seconds. This gives Olney an overall 32 wins against the 39 of Liberal. The international event began in 1950 and, in a spirit of international goodwill and friendship, the two towns now compete annually and prizes are exchanged. The results were shared in the evening via a weblink. This year, the prizes were particularly special as they also celebrated the 250th anniversary of ‘Amazing Grace’, the hymn penned by Rev John Newton, the then curate of Olney Church.
Visitors to the Race were also treated to children’s races, a “Cook it Eat it” competition with Lesley Waters, music and entertainment, and, of course, lots of pancakes!
The Race will be back next year, on Shrove Tuesday 13 February 2024. Like us on Facebook @olneypancakerace, or on Instagram @theolneypancakerace to keep in touch.
